Alpine Botanical Garden
Today, in a large clearing of three hectares at the foot of Mount Maggio, the Passo Coe Alpine Botanical Garden is an extraordinary showcase designed to stimulate the understanding of the rich spontaneous floral heritage. The plants grow in cliffs and rocky areas, meadows and pastures, coniferous forests, shrublands, alpine ponds, and scree, all within their natural growing habitat. Vibrant splashes of color against the green backdrop of meadows and forests attract the visitor’s attention: the blooms alternate from late spring to autumn. The garden is not only about botany: karst phenomena, such as dolines and dirt tracks, along with outcrops of limestone rich in fossils, make the area interesting from a geological perspective as well. Medicinal, edible (pioneer) plants, and poisonous ones, collected in dedicated flowerbeds, tell of ancient mountain customs and superstitions.
