Nearby Forte Cherle, on the side of the Provincial road of Fiorentini (SP N. 142) there is “la scala dell’Imperatore”.
The Stair consist of 183 wide and narrow steps. It reaches the top of the hill where there was the old military hospital of Val Fredda.
To honor the emperor Charles I of Austria, the stair was called “dell’Imperatore”(of the emperor), who visited the front in spring 1917.
It is also called “Scala dei morti” (Stairs of the Deads), because it was the path followed to carry the bodies of the dead soldiers from the hospital to the cemetery of the fort.
