Lusérn is the only Cimbrian linguistic island on the Italian territory and it was acknowledged as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy by the prestigious Association “I Borghi più belli d’Italia”.
This significantly enhanced the value of its history, culture, traditions and
Cimbra language, which is still spoken by all its inhabitants.
The inclusion on the list of the Borghi più Belli d’Italia (the
most beautiful hamlets in Italy) is a remarkable achievement that proves how Lusérn (Luserna) combines together history, culture, traditions and the sound of an ancient language (Cimbro), resulting in a location with a unique, centuries-old identity.
At an altitude of 1333 m a.s.l., Lusérn represents the last bulwark of the Cimbrian language (ancient Bavarian), which is still spoken fluently today by almost all its inhabitants.
This age-old borderland is a village with an enchanting charm, set in an extraordinary landscape featuring natural terracing, cliffs and deep valleys, where fog becomes bucolic and silences turn into sounds. Lusérn has managed to safeguard its traditions and preserve the vast heritage of the Cimbrian culture, also thanks to two important “guardians”: the
Documentation Centre of Luserna (“Dokumentationszentrum Lusérn”) and the
Cimbrian Institute of Luserna (“Kulturinstitut Lusérn”).
